Digipack Feedback from Group 45

Both your magazine advert and DVD cover are very successful. There is continuity between both and the music video. The advertisements are effect with the quote 'A christmas must have' which really pushes the DVD promotion. The contrast between the black and white images on the DVD cover and the pink writing is very eye catching and the shot of the lead singer looks very professional on the magazine advert :) well done!

Group 48 Feedback on Digipack

DVD Album Cover
This album cover is very professional, the entire layout gives a unique appearance. Obviously there are several mistakes, such as spelling. For example; DVD Authoring Cover design done by Nugget and Rob Productions ffrom T2 44 Project for A2 Media project.
Overall, its brilliant. We especially liked the use of the piano up the spine of the album cover.

Magazine Advert
We feel the magazine advert doesn't compare to the album cover. It would've been more apealling if less information was given. However, the colour scheme is effective and the final product is good.

Feedback from 44

Your DVD Cover is good. It includes all the necessary features for a DVD Cover, the magazine advert is nicely done too, with continuity between the use of the same shot for the front of the DVD.

Your artist is promoted well, shown on the front of the DVD and on the magazine cover.

There is continuity but the font styles used do not match. You also spelt commentary incorrectly, you have spelt it without the A resulting it being defined as a commune in the department of Allier in central France. We recognise you were not trying to intend your meaning for this but overall your work is well constructed and gives a good insight into what to expect from your music video.

feedback

Has all that it should have on it.
Promotes artist well, as it has a picture of them on front and back.
The poster is not in black and white which doesn't run with the DVD, or the font is different colours.
The poster doesn't have band website or info like that.
The writing on the front looks a bit muddled.
Continuity good as they have both 2 people in all three things.

Group 48 digi-pack feedback

Your digi-pack definitely follows the same characteristics from your video. The continuity can't be argued with. The advert looks professional with a good shot of your lead singer, and the inclusion of ratings and availability on i`tunes is a good touch also. The DVD cover also carries good continuity and portraits the artist positively. All in all in good digi-pack.

lesson Update

In todays lesson we started work on our digipack. We chose to have a picture of the person who is singing in the video as the background for our magazine advert.

David Bowie DVD Cover

On a dvd cover, i would expect to see the artist displayed on the front of the case. In this example David Bowie is on the front, though his face has been made up by lots of different pictures of his face.

The title of the dvd is in white big bold letters which stand out against the blue background. This is effective in the way that he wants people to notice the dvd so they would then go on to buying it.

On the back of the DVD case has all the tracks
that the DVD contains. This obviously would appeal to any David Bowie fan by letting them

These are dived into two discs which is easily shown on the back so you know which disc to go to when you want to listen to a certain track. The presentation of this is kept simple for the fans so they can scan for the chosen track in an easy manner.see which of his songs the DVD contains.

Inside the dvd cover, there are two different sides, one holding the dvds which is normally on the right side and the other side, it holds the booklet of information about the dvd.

Within the DVD case, the booklet holds information on the artist and their tracks. This information normally consists of the song title, music publisher, director and sometimes the lyrics to the songs.

Reviewing Digipack - Take That, The Circus

'Take That, The Circus' Poster

On the cover of the advert i would expect to see the artists name along with a picture of them. I would also want to see the name of the album and the tour name on the cover making it clear to be identified and selected by the public. These visuals will also give the audience an idea of what to expect, for example in the image above, a poster promoting the 'Take That The Circus' tour bright colours are used and as well as an elephant, a common circus animal with the band members riding it. The line which runs under the name 'Take That' also appears on the CD of the tours album which invokes continuity to the tour.

The overall image of the advert should be eye catching, unique, clean and, more importantly appeal to it's target market.

'Take That, The Circus' CD

On the cover i would expect to see much the same as the advert which, again will show continuity and help the public recognize that both media forms are for the same band/ group. Also both the CD cover and Poster use the same colour blue as the background and white font colour, again keeping the image of the band the same.

Feedback from group 45

This video tells a story therefore the lyrics have a strong relationship with the visuals. It fits in with the genre conventions and sells the artist. Although there are limited shot types, there are some variations featuring the artist. The colour scheme is effective (the black and white representing the females mood) picturing the single Red balloon. When the mood is lifted the video transforms to colour. On the other hand the lip-syncing at begins a little trembly and it is hard to establish whether the artist is actually saying the words however, it does improve towards the end but, the artist looks dis-interested. Furthermore the shot that films the female by the tree and going around the tree is repeated a little too often. The video would benefit from having more vaired shots in place of this repeated footage.
Well done :)
Group 45

Feedback from T2-47.

  • Genre Conventions: Indie Rock genre, clothing matched genre, there was a lead singer. Lip Sync was out at one point. Main story along side that cuts away to, although the story isn't too clear.
  • Lyrics & Visuals: 17 Candles on the cake link to their lyrics.
  • Music & visuals: No instruments but had someone to lip sync.
  • Demands of the record labels: Main artist had lots of shots throughout along side the main story.
  • Voyeurism: Yes, when they're partying with balloons, whens at the tree & when shes texting because you can see her texts.
  • Intertextual reference: No real intertextual reference to any other music video, film or tv program.

Group 48 feedback on final cut

This video is of a rock/pop genre and it does show us some of the typical genre characteristics such as: use of a narrative and advertising the artist but it does miss out other conventions such as showing the band and no performance element.
Within the lyrics and visuals the cake and balloons add to the party elements which is what the song exploits, and explores.
Within the visuals the partying and the down beat amplify the relationship between visuals and the music.
The demands of the record label are to emphasise the artists, this could be achieved better by having more close-ups of the artists to build the recognition of the band.
The reference of notion to looking is very strong in this video, many of the shots are directed at the artists as the watch the lens.
The intertextual is interlinked with modern teenage TV dramas such as skins or waterloo road. The troubled relationships and narrative are similar in these.

Lesson Update

In todays lesson we edited our video further: Firstly we finished gray-scaling the remaining parts of our video. We also began to add video transitions throughout our footage.

For next lesson we plan to capture the last shots, which are the band performing the chorus at the party.

We will also start to design and produce our digipack which involves making a poster with tour dates and information on the band and DVD cover with track names, where it was filmed and on which tour as well as design for DVD image.

Review of last years music video - Group P2-38 'Lotus'

We feel that what makes the video effective and memorable are the low lighting conditions at
the start of the video and when the band performs. This is because using technique hides the
identify of the band which makes the viewer want to see the rest of the video to see what the
band members look like. They also use a technique of back lighting which again creates the
same response.

This video meets the criteria by demonstrating excellence in the following areas:
  • holding a steady shot
  • framing your shots
  • variety of shot distance
  • shooting appropriate material
  • selecting mise-en-scene
  • appropriate set/ locations
  • using varied shot transitions
  • using sound with images
how does it address goodwins points?

From this video we have seen how variety and the amount of shots can improve a video and
make it more interesting. We have also seen how lighting has a big effect on the overall
atmosphere of the video. We also learnt that using a lower camera angle improves the videos
image as it changes the shot variety and earns points on the advanced criteria. Because of this
will be looking into using different camera angles among other techniques which are displayed
in this video.

Additional filming

After we submitted our roughcut it was clear that there were some large portions of footage missing. We plan to fill most of these gaps with the band singing and performing the chorus of the song. We will also include more shot variety (close ups, long shots etc) as up to now we have only really been using medium shots.

Feedback Feedback

We read through the feedback we were given by other groups in our class and have taken it all into consideration. We realized we still need to fill a large section of our work in which we thought lip syncing was the best way to fill this. This way we also stick to the Goodwin's points.

We had positive feedback about the different colour filters which was good as we were most proud about this and it took us a long time to do.

We decided to film some close ups of the female as we haven't got any yet so thought this would be a good idea to include some. This gives it a variety which was mentioned in a feedback from group 48.

Also filming different shots we will be able to replace the scenes which are repeated in the video which some groups did pick up on.

The lip syncing will be demonstrated by the band playing the chorus which we also still need to film.

Roughcut Feedback

We can see that you still have a lot to do and more footage to film but the footage you have is really effective. The parts where you have the girl in black and white with the balloons in colour reflects her emotions and fits in well with the narrative. The camerawork here is also very good. There are a good range of shots that vary throughout the footage to keep the viewers interest.
You need to add some lip syncing and possibly some more close up shots to show the girls emotion even more and make the video more personal.
We really like the ending of the video with the candles on the cake, the editing here is effective but there is room for improvement. We also think that you should use more footage that is lit just with candles as this gives a softer atmosphere to the video.
Well done so far :)

Feedback from 44

Your party shots do represent the genre well, the idea of grey scaled shots to show a disappointed female works well too to give off that effect. The obvious is that you are missing a large portion of your overall music video where the band will be performing. The chromekey filter is a really cool feature to pick out the colour of the balloons against the grayscale for the shot.

it cool, need to fill the gaps in, fits with goodwin. though have not yet seen any lip syncing, fits the genre, good auteur theory, doesnt sell the artist, goes with blog, advanced editing done well, good job.

Group 48 feedback on roughcut

You had some good ideas for this. Obviously there is a lot of footage missing and you miss out on a lot of variety here, you could maybe have some lip syncing in these areas. To be honest just overall more variety to add to the video to make it more aesthetically pleasing, we did also notice the same shots being repeated maybe this could be edited too. But maybe when more footage is added in it will be less recognizable. So overall, more shots, more camera variety to make, and more need to sell the artist.

Review Of Roughcut

Although our roughcut has most of the components which we wanted to include there are still some missing. These include:
  • lip syncing
  • the band playing (performance)
  • various editing transitions
We will plan to shoot the parts missing after half term during one of our media lessons as the shots which we want should not take long. We will fill the gaps with the performance and lip syncing by the band.

Roughcut

This is our roughcut video, as you can see, we are missing quite a large amount of footage. This would be because of all the problems we ran into when filming and some confusion about the direction of the piece. We have thrown together some rough footage so we wouldn't miss the roughcut deadline, whether all or any of the footage used in the piece will be in the final thing, we are unsure.
One thing we are proud of is the editing of the colour balloons on a black and white filter.

When we first tried to upload the video to the blog, we didn't follow the instructions as well as we thought we had so it wouldn't upload. We cancelled this and started from the beginning and this time managed to upload our rough cut.

Location

As we had a bit of a problem shooting at the start, we finally managed to get a perfect place for our party. It may not be an actual garden but it looks the part. Here are some shots of what we
 used in our "Garden";

....Editing continued

As we had mentioned in our last blog, we had trouble trying to keep our females face in black and white whilst changing the colour of the balloon as they were similar colours. We found out with some help that we could crop some of the footage so it shows different sections of the two video slides. This way we could keep her face looking normal instead of badly sunburnt.

We cropped the ballon in one slide and put this over the original slot so we ended up with just the balloon red and rest black and white. Once we knew we could do this and got it sorted out, we were able to use this technique in the other places we wanted to change colour and it turned out to be a better quality of colour as well so it worked out better in the end.

Editing....

So far for our editing, we have managed to upload our footage onto Final Cut Express. We chopped it up into our different sections and placed them in the right slots to go with the music. As we still have to get some footage of our band playing, we have a few empty places where the chorus is which will be filled once we have filmed the band.

We have had some trouble with turning some of our footage black and white but we found out where we were going wrong and it was easy once we knew how to do it properly. We wanted to turn some of our balloons to colour when we had the rest black and white. We had to research into how we could do this and we had trouble adjusting the whole balloon to a certain colour. We changed the balloon to red but the females face also changed red. It took us a long time to finally figure out where we were going wrong and finally, we managed to turn the right parts red whilst keeping everything else black and white.

Lyrics to our chosen song

Below are the lryics for our chosen song, the pink spiders 'seventeen candles' which we will need to learn before filming our music video.

Every day’s a distraction
All the animals just looking for action
And Emily’s free-styling rhymes
Smoking in the girl’s room to kill some time
Cause all they want is a girl who
Parties hard and doesn’t bother to argue
And nobody’s worse for the wear
Everybody’s cool with the “I don’t care”

Seventeen candles are burning bright tonight
But I’ve a feeling
That she believes she’s a bit old for cake
And gifts and party favours
Emily, everyone told her it don’t get much better
Which only upset her
Could this be as good as it gets?

Just as loud as a half-stack
Of vodka tonic bottled up in her backpack
She’s badder than big heavy Jane’s
She turns it all out but the fact remains
That all we do is talk about the future
Like there’s some way to control it
Why not just enjoy the ride?

Seventeen candles are burning bright tonight
But I’ve a feeling
That she believes she’s a bit old for cake
And gifts and party favours
Emily, everyone told her it don’t get much better
Which only upset her
Could this be as good as it gets?

She said if this is the nightlife I’d rather stay in
You call this a good time I just call it a trip
If this is as good as it gets
Then I’m packing up my shit and I’m gone

Seventeen candles are burning bright tonight
But I’ve a feeling
That she believes she’s a bit old for cake
And gifts and party favours
Emily, everyone told her it don’t get much better
Which only upset her
Could this be as good as it gets?

Seventeen candles are burning bright tonight
But I’ve a feeling
That she believes she’s a bit old for cake
And gifts and party favours
Emily, everyone told her it don’t get much better
Which only upset her
Could this be as good as it gets?

Response..to..feedback.

We've looked at the feedback we've received and there has been some good points made. We have taken these on board and have improved on what has been said.

We have had a lot of constructive criticism concerning the state of the storyboard which will need to be rectified. We will:
  • retake the photo of the storyboard, time sheet and annotation to story board making sure that they are of better quality and in a higher resolution which will make it easier to read and understand
We will also add more information to the analysis of professional music videos as this will help us to understand techniques which they use. This way we will be able to take these points and use them in our video so it has that professional look to it.

Feedback from t2-44

In-depth detailed Goodwin's points also the digi pack is very clear and easy to understand especially with the use of the pictures.

It would've been nice to have a call sheet.

We can't seem to maximise the storyboard picture so if you could upload a higher resolution version it would be easier and more informative to see. The pictures though easily shows the idea of the music video in a clear format nonetheless, reading the writing is not possible.

Well structured timeline, the only readable words are BLACK + WHITE so need to fix that!

A LOT of good background work so keep it up!

feedback from group 45

Hi :)
We are group 45 and we have just looked at your blogtiiing it looks great, however we have found a few areas that could be improved upon.
To begin with we found that the colour scheme was great and great for attracting the viewer, many images were used which also kept us intrested. we liked th use of colours and images that have been used.

The storyboard looks quite detailed but lacks enthusiasm as not much detailed was involved

Feedback Group T2-47

  • Well planned, lots of information on planning for the day of filming; Times, Props, Locations.
  • Well thought out linking the video with the song title '17 Candles' with the girl being 17 and 17 candles on the cake, with band playing.
  • Good research. Eg. Target market/Certificate, researching what makes it rated 12.
Hello This is group t2-48 (the loveable rascals)[in order of importance: George, Karl, JJ, Scott] Overall, we like the blog. Theres a lot of necessary information. Could do with some more detail on some posts, such as the analysis of the music video. More writing required as there are several images with no explanations! Also, it would be better if you had more shot types on the shot list with some more explanations of each shot. :Dx

Hello!!!

This is group Q2 39....

We really like your ideas and blog it is nice and bright and very colourful PICTURES ARE GOOD :)
You also have lots of planning
We don't really have any critism for you SORRY lolzzzzz

Music Video Analysis

We decided we should look into another song from The Pink Monkeys called "Modern
Swinger". We wanted our bad to be shown in some of the footage in our video. This
music video shows the band singing and playing the instruments which is what we
intend to use in our music video.

They are also dressed as one of our ideas to how we want our band members to wear
which is another reason for picking this music video to look at. The skinny jeans and
shirts will go well with our video as its a stereotype in this genre and it is shown in most
of the groups that are associated with this genre.

This is the link to the music video "Modern Swingers by The Pink Spiders;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcO3D62mH8c

This picture below is another example of what we intend to have our band look similar
to;

01_rise_band_470x352.jpg

Digipack - magazine rough idea

For our Digipack, we have chosen this because it matches the theme of the music video and incorporates music/lyrics to visuals which will be shown in the video. The DVD cover will follow the same feel as the magazine but will have a different image/ text. Below is what we plan to have as our Digipack cover;

Filming time amendments

We had planned to film our music video outside in a local field. However on the day of shooting the weather was against us and rain was due, because of this we have decided to film our video inside. The props and requirements which we will need will be different from that if we were going to film outside, these differences will be:
  • no need for a tent
  • will need a large table
  • space for the band to play
  • dance space
  • lights

Monday, 5 October 2009

filming Times

We will be filming our video on wednesday the 7th october 2009 from 5:00pm onwards as this is the time which it starts to get dark. This way we can have the fairy lights stand out more and make it seem more realistic.

We expect to film it within one evening as we want to have the same clothing, props, food etc throughout the whole video instead of it changed at a point in the video. However if the weather is bad then we may need to carry on on another night but make sure we have everything as last time.

Props

For our shoot we will need:
  • cake with seventeen candles
  • fairy lights
  • table
  • food and drink
  • marque
  • instrument (2 guitars, bass)
  • flood lights
  • guests

Location

We have decided to film our music video in James' filed as it offers us enough space and is free of charge. Below is a image of the filed:

To make the field look like a party is happening we will put a marque, place fairy lights around the field and put tables with food and drinks etc...

Research into genre specific mise-en-scene

The pink spiders say that their music fits into Rock 'N' Roll/ power pop/ soul music genres.  Below are specific mise-en-scene characteristics for each genre which we should follow when we compose our video.

Costumes: We are going to be looking at three different styles of costumes which are listed below:

Rock 'N' Roll:
Ripped jeans, waistcoats, shaggy long haircuts
Bouncing around the stage, head-banging, looking like they are having fun.

Power Pop:
Skinny jeans, shirts, jackets.
Bright neon colours, Sometimes cartoons, big "in your face" text.

Soul:
Smartly dressed/formal.
Normally singer on cover,  big smiles, a lot of text about the songs on front.

Setting:

We are setting our music video in a garden of one of our group members. This way, we do not annoy other people and have the possibility of doing our video the way we want to without any distractions.

Getting permission form the artist

Before we start filming we needed to get permission from the pink spiders (the artists of our chosen song.) We did this by sending a message on there facebook fans page, the message we send is placed below:

Monday, 28 September 2009

Pitch amendments

Length of music video:

The length of the music for our video is 3:16 although after editing our final video will probably be slightly longer than that due to the fact that we will have to add blank areas at the start and end of the video as well as having establishing and end closing shots which may or may not have the music playing.

Shot types, camera angles and music time line:

Above is the music to visuals time line explaining what shot types and camera angles are used and how long each shop is and wether there is music with the shot or not.

Storyboard and shot list:

The storyboard is to help us remember what we want out of our footage in the right place when we are filming and editing. This way we are organized and will not forget what else we need to film or where we want it.

The shot list is similar to this but also informs us of what kind of shot each one is, therefore, when we go to film, we read this and know what shot we all decided on.

Coursework Deadlines

Planning - 23rd September to the 2nd October 2009

Start shooting - 2nd October 2009 at 4:10 p.m.

Finish shooting - 19th October 2009 at 9:00 a.m.

Roughcut deadline - 22nd October 2009

Final deadline - 5th November 2009 at the end of the lesson

Digipack Deadline: Last lesson of the week ending 27th November 2009

Evaluation draft: Up loaded onto moodle on the 7th December 2009 at 9 a.m.

Final evaluation: up loaded onto moodle on the 14th December 2009 at 9 a.m.

Pitch Feedback

Although our pitch went well there are certain areas which need improving. To enhance our pitch we will add information on:
  • duration of video
  • shot types/ camera angles
  • storyboard
Areas of our pitch which our class members liked:
  • the black and white visuals to suite the mood of the main character (sad and unhappy) which then turn to a colour visual when she is happy - good signifier
  • the slow motion idea, again to suite the mood of the main character
  • the overall concept idea of the video especially the idea of linking the visuals to the music (having seventeen candles)

Target Market

Our chosen target market is young teenagers aged 13-16. We have chosen this because we fell that the song is suited to that generation, also the theme/story told in the music is aimed at that target market.

To make our video suitable for our proposed target market we will ensure that there will be no inappropriate images/ scenes of violence, sex and nudity as well as following the relevant BBFC guidelines, Which are as followed:

Music Video Pitch

17 Candles - The Pink Spiders.

When composing our video pitch there are some points which need to be addressed, they are:
  • The location
  • The story/narrative
  • The look/ feel of the video
  • The tone
  • The pace
  • Colour
Location:
The location will be outside in a garden or field which will mean there will be almost fairy tale with fairy lights and lanterns creating the perfect atmosphere for a party where it will end in romance. This way we can fit in a crowd of people who have been invited to the party and also fit in the band playing.

Story/ Narrative:
The leading lady is throwing a party for her seventeenth birthday, after sending many invites the one person, a boy she likes doesn't turn up. This will obviously be an unhappy time for her starting the music video in a sad mood. She goes on to take comfort in the lead singer of the band playing at her party and realises that it is him who she likes creating a happier mood and making the video have a more cheerful ending.

Look/ feel:
Party atmosphere, darker look untill she becomes happy, busy but must capture the girls feeling of being alone, possible slow-motion. The band are dressed in skinny jeans and shirts and based around The Jonas Brothers like in the above picture.

Tone/ Colour:
Begins black and white to suite the mood of the video (sad and unhappy) but turns into colour when the mood changes (happier and enjoying her self) soft lighting produced mainly from candle light lanterns.

Goodwin's points.
Concerning genre characteristics, with our music video we've decided to class it in the indie/power pop genre. We're planning to stick the conventions around indie music videos.
We hope that our music video will incorporate the visual lyrics idea, for example when the band sing the line '17 Candles' we will do things like show the 17 candles on a birthday cake. The song is about an unhappy girl at a party and that's the main theme of our video. This helps bring in the idea that at the party the band will be performing helping create the visual music idea. As for selling the artist, if our group were to actually be 'The Pink Spiders' (the band that do the song originally) I believe we would be selling the artist, but because we're not, we cannot sell the artist. As for voyeurism, we feel that the need to show style when creating the video should be made evident. We want to portray the true meaning of the song behind the video in a stylistic way that should be enjoyable to watch for an audience.

Digipack:
For our digipack cover, we have decided to use a still from our footage. This way, the audience can link us with our other works and easily recognize from other leading bands. The still we decided to use on the digipack is the leading lady looking up towards the band which are centre stage on the cover. The setting is at the party so the scenery is outside with decoration such as balloons and lanterns. We were wondering if we should also have people who are at the party on the cover on it aswell but decided against this as it took the focus away from the female and band. As the song is called, " seventeen candles", we thought how we could portray this in the cover and thought it best if we kept it simple and put seventeen candles on a cake on a table in the corner of the left hand side so it would be shown but yet again, not taking the focal point away from the characters.
